Difference Between an Endodontist and a General Dentist

Difference Between Dr. Soucie and a Dentist

Advanced Education

Dr. Soucie completed his general dental degree, obtained an advanced degree in general dentistry, two endodontic certificates and a Master’s of Science. In addition to his endodontic degrees from the VA and the University of Alabama Birmingham Dental School, Dr. Soucie elected to complete his Master's of Science, studying bacterial penetration of tooth structure, the source of tooth infections. General dentist have a four year degree, sometimes an AEGD/ GPR and no advanced training in endodontics.

Specialized Expertise

Dr. Soucie performs endodontic therapy day in and day out. He performs an average of 30 root canal procedures per week. General dentists average two root canals per week. He extensively trained and honed his skills in identifying the source of and and facial pain which can often be misdiagnosed and result in unnecessary root canals.

Pain Management Expertise

Root canals are often associated with painful experiences which is understandable if profound anesthesia is not obtained. The depth of anesthesia required for endodontic therapy is greater than the amount required for general dental procedures. Dr. Soucie deals with patients that are experiencing moderate to severe pain 365 days a year. It's kind of his thing. Subsequently, he has evolved his own highly effective techniques to ensure patients comfort, even with patients that have problems had difficulty with anesthesia in the past. He received the Orofacial Pain Award from Marquette University School of Dentistry.
